Depending on the device, 1 or 2 years of updates are included. Once the license has expired, the device will continue to function, but you will no longer be able to download updates and online features will be disabled. You may purchase a new update whenever you consider it necessary; no additional costs will arise if you skip 1 or 2 years in between.
